136330_8535A report in today’s Irish Times will have pint drinkers in Ireland and the UK raising a glass in celebration. The European Parliament has now formally allowed joint use of the metric and imperial systems for measuring beer. Originally, there were plans to migrate all of the EU’s member nations to use the metric system exclusively. 

Fans of the traditional pint can now breathe a sigh of relief that they won’t have to start requesting the rather prosaic ‘568ml glass’ of their beer of choice.

The ruling covers pints of milk and beer and cider on draught and also approves the use of miles for speed indications, road distances and signs in the UK.

Although Ireland has already switched to kilometres on the State’s road network, it has steadfastly refused to give up the pint.
